Crews from Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) are monitoring the George Town Landfill (Tuesday, 1 March 2022) after extinguishing a surface fire this afternoon.

CIFS responded to the initial report of a fire at the Landfill at 3.58 p.m. where they extinguished a fire, approximately 20 ft. in diameter, by 4.48 p.m.

Chief Fire Officer Designate Randy Rankin says that the decision was taken to keep Fire Service and DEH crews onsite overnight as a precaution, assessing thermal imaging readings, and responding to any reignition, to ensure minimal impact on residents and businesses in the vicinity.

DEH officials note the fire was located on the east side of the landfill’s Northwest extension, and originated in fresh load of garbage that likely contained the source of the fire.

CIFS will provide a further update in the morning.
