518 unemployed persons registered for the National Community Enhancement Winter Project (NiCE) which started Monday, 26 November 2018. Of that number 343 have commenced working on the initiative, which provides up to three weeks of work ending on Friday, 14 December. According NiCE Project Manager Levi Allen from the Public Works Department, these figures are significantly less than enrolled on either of the last two Winter initiatives. The current attendance rates will see a projected 502 persons participating by the end of the project. Minister of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure, Hon. Joseph Hew attended the orientation and registration as the head of the lead ministry for the project. In continuing to add new elements to NiCE, registration organisers included a presentation on conflict resolution by a Royal Cayman Islands Police Service trainer. NiCE workers are improving the environment and local community areas in the run up to the Christmas period. As well as clearing beach accesses and doing maintenance and repairs, beautification duties include clearing litter, cutting back overgrowth, cleaning up cemeteries, repainting road markings, tidying road verges and working at the George Town Landfill. Workers will be paid before Christmas.
