Weather

The Cayman Islands has now entered Hurricane Watch as of 4am today, Tuesday 2 July. The elevated status to a Hurricane Watch is due to the anticipated trajectory and speed of Hurricane Beryl who is traveling west northwest from the Windward Islands. The Acting Deputy Governor, Mr. Eric Bush, in his capacity as the Acting Chairman of the National Hazard Management Council, under the advice of the Chief Meteorological Officer of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service and the Director of Hazard Management Cayman Islands made the decision following a briefing early this morning.  This announcement signifies that hurricane conditions are possible within the next 48 hours. Residents must take immediate precautions to protect themselves, their families, and their properties.

Understanding a Hurricane Watch

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerous storm surges are possible within the next 48 hours. It is essential to:

Prepare for Potential Impact: Begin protective actions and complete any necessary preparations as soon as possible.

Stay Informed: Regularly check for updates from official sources, including the National Weather Service, local government websites, and trusted news outlets.

Follow Instructions: Adhere to guidance provided by local authorities, including potential evacuation orders and shelter information.

Actions to Take Now

  1. Batten Down: Ensure that your home is secure by reinforcing doors, windows, and any other potential points of entry for wind and water.
  2. Finalise Your Emergency Kit: Ensure your emergency kit is stocked with water, non-perishable food, medications, batteries, flashlights, and important documents.
  3. Prepare for Shelter: Know the location of the nearest shelter to you in the event you need to seek refuge. Wait for the announcement of the shelter opening.
  4. Communicate Plans: Share your emergency plans with family and friends to ensure everyone knows what to do and where to go.
  5. Stay Updated: Monitor official channels for real-time information and updates on the hurricane’s progress.
  6. Stay Safe: Avoid non-essential travel and stay indoors once the hurricane conditions begin to manifest.

"Our emergency services are fully mobilized, and we are coordinating closely with all relevant agencies," stated Ag. Deputy Governor Eric Bush. "Your cooperation and vigilance are vital. Please follow all safety guidelines and prepare for potential evacuations."

Shelters and Safety Information

Authorities are preparing designated shelters for those who may need to evacuate their homes. A notice will be shared when shelters are opened. Residents should make necessary arrangements to reach these shelters and remain calm during this process.

"We are monitoring Hurricane Beryl closely and are ready to respond as needed," said HMCI Director Dani Coleman. "Take this time to secure your homes and finalize your emergency plans. Stay informed and stay safe."
