More than 2,000 community volunteers removed hundreds of bags of litter from Grand Cayman’s roads, beaches and coastlines on Saturday 24th April as part of the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce’s annual Earth Day’s clean-up.

Now in its 25th year, the Earth Day Clean-up is one of the Chamber’s signature community initiatives, in support of international Earth Day. Each year, the Chamber encourages the public to pick up litter and raise awareness of the ongoing issues it causes.

This year, 150 teams, ranging in numbers from two to more than 50 volunteers, registered and took part. Participants received a custom designed Guy Harvey t-shirt with the theme “Restore our Islands” and were welcomed to George Town Yacht Club for brunch after the event, sponsored by Suntera Global.

“Thank you to all 2000 volunteers, our generous sponsors, the Department of Environmental Health and the Recreation, Parks and Cemeteries Unit for making this year’s event a success,” said Chamber CEO Wil Pineau. “Littering remains one of the top community issues as we continue to see people disrespect our environment by throwing plastic bottles, cans and debris along the roadsides and beaches instead of placing litter where it belongs in trash receptacles.”

The annual Earth Day Clean-up is part of the Chamber's anti-litter public education initiative known as Cayman Clean which focuses its attention on littering and its impact on the environment. Over the past three years the Chamber has placed trash receptacles in public locations in high traffic public locations in Grand Cayman. Four additional receptacles will be placed in May. The wooden receptacles were designed and constructed by inmates at Northward Prison’s rehabilitation workshop.

The Chamber extends its thanks to the Earth Day and Cayman Clean sponsors.
