The RCIPS carried out Operation Azurite Two (2) during the month of December which allowed for high visibility patrols and provide a focused approach to persons driving under the influence of alcohol as well as a host of other traffic related offenses.

The RCIPS also partnered with the National Drug Council for their #ArriveAlive345 Campaign and did a host of joint media appearances to promote the use of the purple ribbon buses on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s morning as well as to educate the public on ways to enjoy the holidays without putting themselves at risk by driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances, such as the Designated Driver Program.  The NDC has informed us that over 3300 person’s road the purple ribbon buses in Grand Cayman and over 40 in Cayman Brac.

“We want to thank everyone who made the responsible decision to ride the purple ribbon buses on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s morning. By taking advantage of this service you have help us in making the roads safer for yourselves and others.” said Inspector Dwayne Jones, head of the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit. “We are also grateful to the National Drug Council and their many partners and sponsors for coming together and making such an invaluable opportunity possible for the citizens of the Cayman Islands, and for including us in their preparations.”

Throughout the month of December, over 50 persons were arrested on suspicion of DUI and just fewer than 300 motor vehicle collisions were record including one fatality. Over 1300 tickets were issued in the month of December with offenses ranging from speeding, illegal tint, use of mobile phones and more.

Of the DUI arrests made in December no arrests for DUI were made on New Year’s Eve however 2 persons were arrested on suspicion DUI on the morning of New Year’s Day.

“Road safety is always the number one priority of the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit.” Added Inspector Jones “Now that Operation Azurite Two (2) has concluded, our focus for the coming year will be to take a proactive approach to road safety through campaigns, partnerships and operations in order to ensure safety on our roadways. We will continue to provide safety tips to all road users, as well as increase enforcement to discourage traffic offenses from being committed and encourage good driving etiquette and proper use of the roadways by all road users.”
