All across the region eager young men filed into the branches and offices of their respective regional bank CIBC FirstCaribbean to “fill” a variety of positions for the day on Tuesday, November 19th in celebration of International Men’s Day.

The “job shadow” activity was an opportunity for a male student to go to work with banking professionals and get the chance to witness a wide range of job skills, ask questions, pick up information and learn first-hand the responsibilities and rewards of employment with CIBC FirstCaribbean.

At the bank’s Cayman Islands headquarters, University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) 18-year old accounting student Alan Cubas took part in an ‘Emotional Intelligence (EQ)’ workshop which provided an introduction to practicing self-awareness, channelling your emotions well, learning to motivate yourself, recognizing emotions in others and infusing your emotions with values.

Mr. Cubas spent the remainder of the day with the Finance team where he was exposed to a number of bank processes including the financial review of reconciliation schedules and audits. In addition, he was provided with the opportunity to meet with the Cayman OpCo’s Financial Controller Lauren Crozier where he “actively engaged” in a discussion that gave insight into the accounting field and advice on career progression.

Head of Human Resources for Cayman & BVI Sherrill J. Beckford stated, “CIBC FirstCaribbean remains committed to the development of young students and we were delighted to provide Alan with a job-shadowing opportunity.”

“I met with Alan at the end of the day and was pleased to have him describe his experience as “wonderful and beyond my expectations,” she added.

“I would like to thank the CIBC FirstCaribbean staff for the opportunity granted to me to attain insight into your working environment. I was very pleased with all the activities that I partook in, finding them dynamic and highly beneficial,” said Mr. Cubas “I especially wanted to express my appreciation for your insightful advice going forward in my professional career. Thank you for informing me about the bank’s excellent and exciting Summer Internship Program. I will certainly make contact with you in the near future to explore this further,” he added.
