A report released today (20 March 2023) by the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) underscores the importance of ongoing efforts by the new Ministry of Sustainability & Climate Resiliency (MSCR), and the wider Cayman Islands Government (CIG), to strengthen alignment between the CIG’s outputs and outcomes and the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The new OAG report evaluates the Cayman Islands’ performance against eight of the 17 SDGs that are directly focused on the environment.

The MSCR supports the aim of the newly released report and looks forward to conducting its own comprehensive review of the information gathered by the OAG over the next few weeks. Independent analysis of public sector efforts play an important role in promoting accountability, transparency and achieving best value for public money.

The OAG report is timely as the MSCR recently launched its own project to enhance awareness and understanding of the SDGs within the Government’s entities with the ultimate goal of identifying priority areas of strategic alignment and local targets under the Goals.

While the OAG report focuses on a selection of the Goals most closely linked with the natural environment, the SDGs are a holistic, integrated framework for achieving peace and prosperity for people and planet, both now and into the future. Providing access to quality education, improving food security, reducing inequality, achieving gender equality, and promoting sustained, inclusive economic growth are all important SDGs, which are critical to our success as a country which pursues a high quality of life for our people.

In addition to recommending local targets under the Goals that should be considered as the priority areas of focus for the next two years, the MSCR-led SDG analysis project will formalise existing CIG sustainability initiatives within the context of a globally recognised framework.

The MSCR looks forward to introducing new projects and initiatives to help raise awareness and understanding of the SDGs both within the public sector and the wider community.
