Planet Vs Plastics is the focus for this year’s Chamber of Commerce Annual Earth-day Cleanup when more than two thousand volunteers situated in teams all over the Cayman Islands will be picking up litter from our beaches, parks, and roadsides – keeping our islands beautiful for tourists and residents alike.
“Planet Vs Plastics” expands the scope. By acting locally, we can set an example for the region and the world. The threat of plastic pollution has become increasingly apparent for the future of ecosystems all over the world –particularly in the Cayman Islands where marine wildlife is threatened. Animals that inhabit Cayman’s beautiful coral reefs may ingest floating plastic items. Turtles are known to mistake plastic bags for jellyfish – one of their favorite foods.
Microplastics are known to pose a risk to wildlife and human life too. Our understanding of issues such as global warming shifts our focus as we gain a deeper understanding of our collective stewardship as an integral part of our quality of life, safety, and ultimately our survival.
Many Chamber businesses large and small are doing much more, with more in-house recycling programmes, the use of electric vehicles, or the incorporation of many energy-efficiency measures and renewables into new or existing buildings.
