The National Trust for the Cayman Islands held a “Meet & Greet” function on Saturday 11th March 2023 to introduce new employee Alex Flores, Community Engagement Officer (Sister Islands) in Cayman Brac.
The event was held at Kabana Kai Coffee Shop in the West End. Approximately 40 persons attended the two-hour function. Free drinks and refreshments were provided. A short speech was given by National Trust Executive Director Frank Roulstone who welcomed Alex to the “family”. He thanked all for attending but singled out renowned ornithologist and National Trust Council member Patricia Bradley for coming over from Grand Cayman, Marketing & Promotions Manager for District Administration Chevala Burke for her help in recruiting Alex, and long-serving Brac National Trust member Wallace Platts for his continued support of the organization. He also expressed his appreciation to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) for helping to fund the position for the first year.
Other members of the Brac District committee attended including Chairman Debra Vascik. Through digital means Little Cayman District Chairman Gregory McTaggart also welcomed Alex to the National Trust team and said he looked forward to working with her. “We are grateful that the Trust has seen fit to devote regular staff resources to the Sister Islands. This is the first time as far as we are aware that Trust staff have been resident on the Sister Islands.”
In response Alex thanked everyone for attending and asked for the community’s support in making her job successful. She already has plans for the Brac Agricultural Show and an upcoming Summer Camp. She returned home from university in December with a Bachelor’s in Wildlife Conservation and a Masters in Environmental Science from the University of Liverpool. Alex will be temporarily based at the National Trust house on White Bay Road until renovations are completed at the Eldemire House historic site.
