On the evening of the 4th of April, 2020 the Ombudsman was notified by the Commissioner of Police that RCIPS officers were involved in a pursuit of a number of motorcyclists in the Newlands area of Grand Cayman. In light of the significant public interest in this matter, and the unprecedented police power during the coronavirus pandemic, the Ombudsman has decided to investigate the actions of the police on her own initiative. Ombudsman investigators are currently awaiting the production of a number of initial documents, recordings and statements from the RCIPS to assess the circumstances and determine additional investigative requirements.
The Ombudsman will not be providing comment regarding the investigation while it is ongoing but a public report will be made available upon its conclusion.
