On Saturday police conducted an operation in the area of Fairlawn Road, George Town in response to concerns about a public gathering taking place in contravention of the soft curfew order under the new Public Health Regulation. A gathering of several people engaging in cockfighting were seen at the location.

During the operation, 2 men age 25 and 32, both of George Town, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, illegal gambling, possession of ganja and as well as for breach of curfew relating to COVID 19 prevention. Several other people who were present at the time of the police arrival were also warned for intended prosecution for COVID related offenses as well as offenses relating to animal cruelty.

Animal welfare and control officers from the Department of Agriculture assisted with the operation and over 30 roosters were seized.

The men will remain in police custody pending further investigations.

The matter is currently under police investigation.
