Cayman will celebrate all things arts and culture at the 11th annual Red Sky at Night multi-disciplinary arts festival, presented by the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF). Tickets are now on sale for the event which takes place on Saturday, 2 March from 4pm to 11pm on the grounds of the F. J. Harquail Cultural Centre.
Red Sky is Cayman’s finest showcase of local talent, with an emphasis on local arts and culture, and a dynamic mix of visual arts, music, theatre and film. The event will feature two sound stages – one inside the Harquail Theatre and the other outdoors in an area called The Square – with dance, music, theatre, poetry and more all taking place throughout the evening.
“Red Sky is a signature event on Cayman’s annual calendar. It is a celebration of who we are as a people and provides a platform to highlight the incredible talent, diversity and creativity that exists in our community. CNCF’s mission for the past 40-plus years is to stimulate, facilitate and preserve cultural and artistic expression; Red Sky at Night supports that vision through its promotion of Cayman’s heritage and culture,” said Natalie Urquhart, CNCF’s Chief Executive Officer.
“I encourage individuals and families to come out and enjoy this event and support Cayman’s creatives who bring so much colour and vibrance to our lives and our community.”
Nearly 50 fine artists and artisans will display their creations of locally made art, crafts, jewellery, clothes and accessories on the Thatch Walks, and vendors in the Café Cayman area will offer local dishes as well as snacks and desserts. In addition, the Visual Arts Society will host the Creative Kids area and provide supervised activities for kids ages three to 12.
Attendees can step back into the islands’ history at the Caymanian Village, which honours Caymanians’ past way of life and shares their traditions through interactive and cultural demonstrations. Visitors will have a chance to wander through the traditional village and experience a pavilion of crafted heritage tools including calavans, fish pots and a caboose, engage in a traditional game of Wauri, enjoy an interactive discussion of turtling history, holiday traditions of sand backing, or a delicious taste of freshly made swanky, made with locally sourced Seville oranges. Not to be missed is everything silver thatch, courtesy of craft creators who will be plaiting and twisting as they use this locally grown palm to make thatch rope, roofs, ground baskets and hats, which was an important resource for many generations of seafarers and families in everyday living.
Tickets for Red Sky at Night are an affordable $10 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors and can be purchased at ticketsplus.ky or at the gate on the day of the event. Ticket sales at the gate begin at 3pm on 2 March.
