The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is advising the public of the fire which occurred at the Cayman Brac Landfill on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
The DEH is confirming that smoke and open flame were observed in the landfill during the afternoon hours. The Cayman Islands Fire Service were notified and they attended the scene. The cause of the fire is unknown; however, it is suspected that recent tipped materials ignited and caused the fire.
The Cayman Islands Fire Service worked diligently throughout the day and night to bring the fire under control. There remains smoke generating from the site but this is reducing. DEH are working to place cover materials over the affected areas to reduce this impact further.
For residents downwind of the landfill we advise that doors and windows are kept closed and to limit outside activities in areas where smoke is persisting.
Further update will be provided in due course.
