Cayman Connection, the not-for-profit support organisation for Caymanians studying or training overseas, recently hosted a university guidance workshop for students and parents from Triple C School. The session, led by Cayman Connection’s global student ambassadors, provided firsthand insights into studying overseas in the USA, Canada, and the UK.

The event, held at the George Town Library and livestreamed for those unable to attend in person, was inspired by a Triple C School parent who reached out to Cayman Connection for direction on navigating the complexities of overseas tertiary education. The parent was seeking information directly from current university students as an extension to the comprehensive guidance given by the careers teams at Triple C School. Cayman Connection responded by assembling a team of knowledgeable student ambassadors who shared practical advice on applications, visas, travel, banking, health, mental well-being, and cultural adaptation.

The workshop included dedicated sessions for each region:

  • USA: Eddie Webber, who recently graduated from University of Michigan with a master’s degree in public policy, led discussions on fee assessment processes, dorm vs. apartment living, safety tips, and emergency resources.
  • UK: Ayanda Jones, lead global student ambassador, compiled the presentation and guided students through the topics of independent living, handling homesickness, and study habits.
  • Canada: Gabriela King, a former Triple C student now studying at York University in Toronto, shared personal experiences and helped students prepare for seasonal changes, settling in, and fitting into a new environment.

The workshop concluded with an engaging Q&A session where attendees asked questions about clothing and shipping considerations, visa requirements, passports and more.

“Hosting the inaugural introduction to living and studying abroad presentation alongside my fellow student ambassadors was truly a rewarding experience. The dialogue shared between our regional ambassadors and the Triple C School community highlighted not only the strength of our young Caymanians embarking on their first journeys overseas, but also their commitment to staying connected and supporting each other. Seeing their excitement and aspirations was inspiring and it was a privilege to be able to put on such a great event for our growing network,” said Miss Jones.

“We sincerely thank Cayman Connection for answering the call for more resources for tertiary education-bound students. With such incredible responsiveness, a comprehensive presentation, and an amazing group of multi-jurisdictional student volunteers led by Ms. Kandiah, this session offered helpful insights and, most of all, comfort for students embarking on the next stage of their academic career,” said Triple C parent Tania Ebanks.

Building on the success of the event, Cayman Connection and Triple C School are now exploring a continued partnership aimed at providing comprehensive support for students pursuing tertiary education overseas. This collaboration will help to guide the students on their journey overseas, empower them throughout their time abroad, and assist with their return home to reintegrate into the world of work in Cayman upon graduation.

The Cayman Connection team invites schools and parents to get in touch and learn more about how they can work together to support students' educational journeys. For more information, email hello@caymanconnection.org.
