Approximately 40 private sector companies, and government agencies, participated in the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre's (CIFEC) Career Fair held at the new John Gray High School Performing Arts Centre last Friday (23 September).

Students had an opportunity to learn about the various organisations as they competed for work placements.

Participating companies included HSM, the Public Works Department (PWD), the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA), the Department of Environmental Health, Davenport Property Management, KMPG and Dart.

CIFEC's Career Services Manager, Ms. Jenine Stewart, was pleased with the tremendous support from the business community.

"The fair has turned out to be quite a success. Despite the impending storm, we have had many of the usual organisations and several new companies supporting us. Students have been speaking with employers and receiving work placement offers. We are looking forward to a very productive internship year," Ms. Stewart stated.

Salon Fab was among those businesses participating in the CIFEC Career Fair for the first time.

Representative Telia Williams commented, "We hope our involvement in this fair will create awareness among young people about the many opportunities in the beauty industry and encourage them to consider careers in this field."

For Automotive and Work Skills student Savio Seymour, the fair opened the door to several possibilities. He said, "This fair is great. I'm interested in working in plumbing, and I am thrilled that companies such as Public Works are here so that I can speak directly with representatives and try to secure an internship."

CIFEC's Internship Programme supports the transition from school to work and prepares young people for work by providing them with the necessary skills and motivation to succeed. As part of this programme, students attend school three days per week and gain work experience within participating companies two consecutive days per week, from October to April.
