In a momentous display of community collaboration, nine service clubs from across Grand Cayman came together on Saturday, September 14, 2024, for a historic tree planting initiative at the newly established Eddie Sanchez Memorial Park in Prospect. The event was held in celebration of International Joint Service Week 2024, observed from September 8 to 14, and marked the first-ever joint tree planting project at this location.
Participating clubs included:
- Lions Club of Tropical Gardens
- Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman
- Rotary Central Cayman Islands
- Rotary Sunset
- Rotary Club of Grand Cayman
- Rotary Sunrise
- Lions Club of Grand Cayman
- Optimist Club of George Town
- Seed of Hope Optimist Club
This collaborative event, which commenced at 6:30 AM, was well-supported by members of the community, volunteers, and local leaders, including the Honourable Sabrina Turner, MP for Prospect, who joined the efforts to plant a variety of trees such as Poinciana, Palms - Coconut, Royal & Christmas, Mahogany, and Pink Tabebuia.
The tree planting was made possible through the generous sponsorship of local businesses, including Pro-Plus, Earthworks Landscaping and Farm, and Dart. Additional support was provided by the Public Works Department, Caribbean Blooms, and the Prospect Red Bay Community Group, whose combined efforts ensured the success of this impactful project.
Organisers emphasized that some of the trees were donated, while others were purchased, symbolizing a joint community effort to enhance environmental sustainability and the beautification of the park. “The event was a testament to our collective commitment to community engagement, volunteerism, and making a positive impact,” said Lion President Alicia Hansraj from the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens.
Rotary Sunset President Patrick Schmid added, “We believe that community projects are most impactful when clubs collaborate. This tree planting initiative reflects the power of working together to benefit the environment and future generations.”
This joint service project underscores the importance of fostering sustainability, promoting volunteerism, and uniting community service efforts. Through initiatives like this, Grand Cayman's service clubs continue to set a powerful example of how partnerships between local organisations can lead to meaningful and lasting change.
Rotary Sunrise President Marlon Bodden, calling himself a proud Rotarian, said he was happy to work along with other service/community clubs to make the world a better place and beautify our community. ‘The spirit of unity is certainly present among us’, Mr Bodden concluded.
