Last Friday (04 October), the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre (CIFEC) held a successful career fair at the Mary Miller Hall, featuring approximately 40 employers from private companies and government agencies. Participating entities included Ogier, HSM, McAlpine, The Security Centre, Foster’s Supermarket, Department of Environment, and the Computer Services Department.
Approximately 250 CIFEC students attended, eager to explore internship opportunites and various career paths. Organiser and career advisor Tania Johnson emphasised the event’s goals: “The purpose of the event is to expose students to a diverse range of companies. Many students tend to focus solely on traditional roles when they consider job opportunities. This career fair offers them a chance to discover various options available in the Cayman Islands.”
Among the attendees was Deandra Bigby, a CIFEC student aspiring to be an interior designer. She shared, “I have learned that even if you don’t secure the internship you want, it’s still beneficial to send out resumes. Some positions can provide valuable experience related to your career goals. For instance, since budgeting is an important part of being an interior designer, gaining experience in finance could really help my understanding of that area.”
The career fair also served as a valuable platform for employers to scout future talent. They sought candidates with a genuine interest in the field, an eagerness to learn, professionalism, and strong communication skills. Representatives offered insightful advice and guidance to students entering the job market. DeAnn Blackman, Manager of Local Talent Development and Corporate Citizenship at KPMG, encouraged students to seize opportunities. “You never know where that opportunity might lead you. It might be the stepping stone that leads you to your long-term goal.”
CIFEC mandates that students gain work experience through internships, dedicating two days per week to their placements. This essential component helps prepare students for life after school by aiding in the development of applicable skills.
