On Monday, the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) conducted the final safety checks on the vehicle recycling plant before handing control back to the site’s operator.
A small crew from CIFS along with the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) and Island Recycling were on scene to extinguish any last remaining deep seated pocket fires.
Handover of control back to Island Recycling was expected Monday morning. Strict instructions have been given to the site operator to maintain a watching brief and dial 911 if any signs of re-ignition are seen, however small.
CIFS crews will then visit the scene regularly to check for hotspots using thermal imaging cameras.
It is anticipated that no smoke plume will be visible from the site during the day. Residents and businesses in the immediate vicinity are not expected to be affected by any final damping down operations.
