The Department of Education Services (DES) today announced updates to the 2024-2025 school calendar following a five-day shortfall in the required instructional days resulting from weather-related school closures earlier in the academic year.
The changes to the 2024-2025 calendar are as follows:
Instructional Day on 28 April: Previously designated as a Professional Development Day, Monday, 28 April, will now be a regular school day with students reporting for instruction.
Extension of Final Term Days: Originally scheduled for a storm/emergency day, Friday, 4 July, will now be an instructional day for all public school students.
DES Director Mark Ray added, "Schools will also adjust their timings throughout the school day to meet the legislated mandate of 185 instructional days, while ensuring as little disruption as possible. They will communicate the details of these changes to parents and guardians this week."
The Education Law mandates 185 instructional days per academic year.
The DES Director acknowledged the challenges the changes may pose for families, stating, "I understand that adjusting family schedules can be challenging. However, these changes are essential to compensate for the valuable learning time our students lost to severe weather events last year, and to ensure compliance with the Education Act. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to ensure our students' academic success."
