Fire at North Side Debris Site is Under Control

General

The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) advises the public that a fire has been reported at the North Side Temporary Site for Vegetation Debris. Members of the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) were called to the site where they quickly contained the fire and brought it under control. Smoke maybe visible from the site throughout the day as an area of vegetation debris is monitored as controlled burning.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fire started at 4:00 AM. CIFS crews from Frank Sound Fire Station were mobilized and quickly brought the fire under control and worked with DEH colleagues and heavy machinery to implement fire breaks to prevent further spread. The cause of the fire is still unknown. Furthermore, inspections have been carried out at all other debris sites and reviews are underway to further reduce the risks posed by fires.

Residents are reminded that all temporary sites for post storm vegetative waste are currently closed to the public following the completion of the Island-Wide Vegetation Collection Schedule.
