The Annual Geology Week came to a close on Friday, 28 October, marking a successful return visit by renowned geologist Dr Brian Jones.
Geology Week is an annual event sponsored by Water Authority-Cayman and Dr Jones to promote local interest in the subject of geology. Dr Jones, a distinguished professor at the University of Alberta, has been visiting and conducting research in the Cayman Islands for over 35 years.
The week-long series of events included a lecture and field trip to local sites of geologic interest on Grand Cayman for teachers and professionals, as well as lessons to high school students at Cayman Prep and High School, Cayman Academy, Hope Academy and Layman E. Scott High School about plate tectonics, the rock cycle, and coral reefs and the geology of the Cayman Islands. Cayman Life TV will feature the professional development course for teachers in its Classroom of the Month series in the coming weeks.
Water Authority Director Dr Gelia Frederick-van Genderen said that the Authority is always encouraged to see local interest in Geology Week grow.
“We are so grateful to Dr Jones for returning to the Cayman Islands to share his expertise with local teachers, professionals and students,” she said. “Geology is essential to the day-to-day operations of the Authority, as well as to the success of its major infrastructure projects. I hope that Dr Jones’ lectures will inspire young people in the Cayman Islands to pursue geology as they progress in their educational and professional careers.”
