The Department of Counselling Service’s (DCS) Family Resource Centre (FRC) looks forward to sharing a host of participant-focused events to celebrate Honouring Women Month (HWM) this March.

This year’s theme asks members of the community to #ChoosetoChallenge regardless of gender or age.

“HWM 2021’s theme, adopted from the one chosen for International Women’s Day (IWD), asks us to challenge ourselves because a challenged world is an alert world. We can all choose to call out gender bias and inequality. It reflects the times we are living in, where the need for critical thinking and to challenge negative behaviours as they relate to gender dynamics have never been more important,” says FRC’s Programmes Coordinator, Mrs. Charmaine Miller.

“We all have a crucial part to play in shaping our communities. In order to change inequality where it exists, we need to first challenge it. Celebrating women’s achievements and promoting gender equity are proactive ways of encouraging a fairer, more balanced society and is central to what HWM stands for.”

“Our calendar is broad enough for everyone to find multiple events they will enjoy taking part in. We strongly encourage women and men, boys and girls to get involved in HWM and in doing so pledge to play their part in helping forging a better world,” she added.

The fundraising focus of this year’s observation will be geared to maintaining and promoting the FRC’s Young Parents Services (YPS). This programme supports parents between the ages of 13 and 25 years old as they experience many barriers for success, including poverty, unemployment, lack of transportation, childcare, health care and an inability to access professional development & education. Through the delivery of the YPS services and this year’s fundraising efforts, FRC aims to continue to support clients by providing monthly stipends to meet basic needs, educational sponsorships, childcare sponsorship, transportation support and vouchers, all with the aim of allowing these families to achieve their potential.

DCS Director, Mrs. Judith Seymour, says: “HWM is a useful opportunity to reinforce the fact that everyone has a role to play in forging a more gender-balanced world, while recognising the personal and collective responsibility we share in advocating for and encouraging inclusive mind-sets and tangible action.

“Now in its 22nd year, our HWM offerings get more ambitious annually, which is of course a tribute to the hard work of our FRC and the enthusiasm with which the community takes part in our planned activities,” the Director concludes.
