The Health Services Authority (HSA) Haematology, Oncology and Chemotherapy Centre now has their second full-time Oncologist-Haematologist specialist with the addition of Dr. Danielle Smellie.

A graduate of the University of the West Indies, Dr. Smellie obtained her doctorate in Haematology & Medical Oncology, gaining significant experience at the Hope Institute Hospital, the Kingston Public Hospital, and the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica.

Her clinical interests are focused on treating patients with breast, lung, colon cancers, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, anaemia, as well as performing bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedures.

"I am delighted to join the oncology and haematology team at HSA. The prospect of collaborating with such a dynamic and compassionate group is both motivating and fulfilling. What attracted me to HSA is its progressive approach to cancer care,” Dr. Smellie noted.

Dr Smellie, who will be speaking on the topic of ‘The Holistic Approach to Oncology Care Pathways’ at the World Cancer Day event hosted by the HSA on the 1^st February, explained that her goal is to provide meaningful treatment to those entrusted to her care.

“I am eager to build meaningful relationships with my patients and their families. Cancer care is an intensely personal journey, and my commitment extends beyond medical expertise to encompass genuine empathy and support. My philosophy revolves around viewing each patient holistically, recognising the importance of emotional and psychological aspects in their healing process,” Dr Smellie stated.

“I try to empower individuals to actively participate in their treatment journey, fostering a sense of control and resilience. By integrating the latest advancements in oncology and haematology with a compassionate touch, I want to instill hope in the hearts of those facing the challenges of cancer,” she said.

The HSA’s Haematology, Oncology and Chemotherapy Centre continues expanding its services including specialist clinical haematology and medical oncology services, infusion and administration of immunotherapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and other targeted therapies. Specialist laboratory tests including genetic and mutation analysis testing, oncology pharmacy services, and other treatments are also provided.

“The dedicated facility opened in 2014 with the support of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, starting with only a small number of patients. The service has since grown from 10 patients to more than 370 patient visits per month,” said the Centre’s lead doctor Consultant Oncologist-Haematologist Dr. Lundie Richards.

“I am excited to have Dr. Smellie on the team making the HSA the only facility on island with full-time oncologist-haematologists. With her addition, the HSA is improving its internal quality assurance and the national diagnosis for non-cancer cases. It also reduces the need for patients to be referred overseas for second opinion,” he noted.

Additionally, a significant part of the facility involves the offering of skilled care for patients with non-cancerous haematology and immunological disorders that affect multiorgan systems such as the blood, lymph nodes, musculoskeletal system, and bone marrow.

The World Cancer Day CME event will be held at the Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa from 5:00pm – 7:30pm, under the theme of "Holistic Approach to Oncology Management".

The event will delve into a comprehensive exploration of strategies and methodologies that transcend the traditional boundaries of medical care, fostering a more encompassing and patient-centric perspective. The discussions will encompass a spectrum of topics, including the importance of a Cancer Registry, the holistic approach to oncology care pathways, the psychology of coping with cancer and age-appropriate cancer screening.

Dr Richards expressed that, “our emphasis on a holistic approach recognises that effective oncology management involves not only the treatment of the disease itself but also the cultivation of resilience, hope, and a sense of control for both patients and their families. Through insightful presentations and collaborative discussions, this event will serve as a platform to explore and integrate diverse perspectives, ultimately contributing to advancing patient-centred oncology care.”

The forum will feature presentations by cancer care experts of the Authority, including Dr Smellie, Dr Kimon Bonadie, Dr David Nightingale, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nick Gent, patient testimonials and a panel discussion and display booths of cancer support groups in the Cayman Islands including the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, Jasmine, Breast Cancer Foundation and Cayman Islands Cancer Registry.
