With Hurricane Ian declared Monday, 26 September 2022 4 am by the Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS), Grand Cayman faces the onset of tropical storm force winds based on the latest forecast track.
Residents should prepare for the closest point of approach based on the current track of 75 miles southwest of Grand Cayman forecasted for around 7 am.
As at 4 am, Hurricane Ian was located at 18.2N and 82.0W of about 85 miles SW of Grand Cayman with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Hurricane Ian is moving towards the NW at 14 mph with minimum central pressure of 983mb / 29.03 inches.
Wave heights of 11 to 14 feet are estimated along the south and west coast of Grand Cayman. Swells of 5 to 7 feet are likely along with 2 to 4 feet of storm surge.
Residents are advised to closely monitor the storm’s progress and continue to remain vigilant, stay indoors and keep tuned in. Conditions are expected to worsen as Hurricane Ian passes Grand Cayman offshore.
Tropical Storm force winds are forecasted for Grand Cayman through 3 pm Monday, 26 September.
The Sister Islands should expect overcast skies along with widespread thunderstorms are expected as Hurricane Ian moves closer to the Cayman Islands. Extremely rough seas along with swells and storm surges are also expected.
