On Saturday (05 October), Layman E. Scott Senior High School held their graduation at the Aston Rutty Centre, celebrating 33 students under the theme ‘Like Diamonds, We Are Created Under Pressure’.
Premier and Minister for Education, the Honourable Juliana O’Connor-Connolly addressed the graduates, expressing her pride in their exceptional accomplishments and encouraging them to pursue their goals with determination. “Just know that for your diamond to continue to shine, you have to be resolute, you have to be resilient, you have to be committed, [and] you have to be determined because your performance will ride on your commitment.”
Principal Devon Bowen also praised the graduating class for their pursuit of excellence. “Class of 2024, you are characterised by your remarkable achievements. Your academic accomplishments speak volumes about your dedication and perseverance through the last six years.”
He highlighted their impressive external examination results, noting that 81% of graduates achieved a Level 2 pass in mathematics. Furthermore, the cohort achieved a 91% pass rate in Science and an impressive 97% pass rate in English.
A total of 20 students received honours awards. Fourteen students graduated with Level 2 honours, having passed at least seven subjects passed at Level 2 or higher, including English and mathematics.
Six students received Level 2 high honours for passing at least nine subjects at Level 2 or higher, achieving grades I or II, or A*, A or B.
Additionally, five students were recognised with the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for their exceptional performance in external examinations.
Marketing and public relations professional, Mrs. Olivia Scott-Ramirez, shared her inspiring journey and emphasized the importance of resilience and adaptability in her keynote speech. As a fellow Cayman Brac graduate, her message motivated the graduating class to continue to aspire for greatness. “You are more capable than you know and, like diamonds, you will continue to shine.”
Valedictorian Tabitha Giscombe delivered a touching speech that commemorated the cohort’s persistent tenacity and ambition. “We are not merely students who have diligently followed a plan; we are a collective that dared to dream big.”
