On Saturday evening (20 November), a small group of family members, friends gathered at the Aston Rutty Civic Centre to be a part of Layman E. Scott High School's 2021 graduation ceremony held under the theme, 'There Is No End, Only New Beginnings'.
During his address to the 21 graduates, Acting Principal Devon Bowen used the opportunity to hail them for their resilience. “You have shown independence and maturity in the way you engaged with remote learning. As you reflect on the past year, be comforted in the knowledge that while it was tough, it was character-building, and you have all stood up to the challenge.”
Mr. Bowen also charged graduates to make difficult choices as they move forward. “Get outside your comfort zone and make brave choices along your life’s path,” he asserted.
Guest speaker, Workforce Opportunities & Residency Cayman (WORC) Executive and Layman Scott alumna, Ms. Marshienne Juman urged graduates to be persistent in all their efforts, adding, “You do not have to be great to start but you have to start to be great.”
Class valedictorian Tiana Grey echoed a similar sentiment. “As we stand on the cusp of our future, let us remember, we must work hard at all stages of our lives from this day forward to succeed; not only academically, but socially, morally and emotionally.”
Tiana along with salutatorian David Tibbetts were awarded for their outstanding academic achievement. They were among seven students graduating with high honours, having achieved passes in nine or more subject areas including English and math.
Mr. Kevin Roberts, Mr. Alphanso Gayle, Sahadeo Sohan, the LSHS Steel Pan Band, Kasandra DaCosta and Kenny Ryan also participated in the evening's proceedings.
