On Wednesday, 29 March, officers responded to a report of an assault at the Seven Mile Public Beach. It was reported that a vendor at the location had used pepper spray on a member of the public, during a dispute over a transaction. Officers attended the location and spoke to the victim, who was treated by emergency services on the scene. The suspect had already left the location.
Following further investigations, on Saturday, 1 April, officers attended a residence in West Bay where the suspect resides. The suspect, a man age 20 of West Bay, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a prohibited weapon and common assault.
A search of the residence was conducted, during which officers recovered a number of rounds of ammunition from the premises. The man was further arrested on suspicion of possession of the ammunition. A woman, age 27 of George Town, who was present at the location, was also arrested.
The man has now been formally charged with Possession of an Unlicensed Firearm (Ammunition) and appears in court today, 3 April. The woman has been granted bail as investigations continue.
The assault incident remains under investigation.
