The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Heritage has begun the publication of Caymanian books aimed at educating and bringing awareness to Caymanian heritage. Working in collaboration with the Department of Education Services and the Ministry of Education, this collaborative approach ensures the utilisation and alignment with the education system.
The first in what is expected to be a series of books, is about Cayman’s 10 National Heroes entitled “Our National Heroes”. “Our National Heroes” was written and illustrated locally by two Caymanian creatives, Camille Angel (nee Bodden) and Brian Watler Jr., respectively. The book features an illustration of each National Hero and information about their careers and contributions to the Cayman Islands. It also features a brief history of National Heroes Day and an activity and colouring section which is anticipated to be expanded.
The Ministry has also re-published the “West Bay Heritage Dictionary,” which was originally produced and issued by the West Bay Heritage Committee. The West Bay Heritage Dictionary is a 31-page book that reminds readers that the Caymanian dialect varies slightly from district to district and captures the unique dialect of West Bay. The introduction in the dictionary mentions that early settlers came from various European and West Indian countries, which has contributed significantly to the vernacular of Caymanians. It also highlights the well-known pronunciation of V as W that many residents of West Bay are known for.
A limited supply of the books was made available at the recent National Heroes Day ceremony with an author and illustrator signing of ‘Our National Heroes’ at the Constitution Hall Exhibition. The West Bay Heritage Dictionary was also made available, with positive feedback received on both publications. Plans for the distribution to all schools and public libraries across the Cayman Islands is underway.
As the Ministry begins to make plans for the reinstatement of Emancipation Day Celebrations in 2024, an educational publication is also being developed. This celebration of Cayman’s rich heritage and the strength of its people will bring greater awareness to the Islands’ history for the community but especially young people, so as to embrace national pride and national identity.
