The Miss World Cayman Islands Committee is set to host a viewing party for the 70th edition of the Miss World pageant on Wednesday, March 16th 2022 starting 6pm at Karoo, Camana Bay.
The pageant was originally scheduled for December 16, 2021 in Puerto Rico. However, just hours before the start of the live televised event it was postponed due to a number of people linked to the event, including at least 23 contestants and staff members of Miss World testing positive for COVID-19. The rescheduled 70th Miss World pageant will take place on March 16, 2022. Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica will crown her successor at the end of the event.
Reigning Miss World Cayman Islands 24 year old Rashana Hydes from West Bay represented the Cayman Islands, and was among 97 contestants who participated in this Miss World edition, marking the smallest field of contestants since 2002. 15 contestants have earned their spot in the semi-finals via various mini competitions and the remaining 25 semi-finalists were officially announced via Miss World’s Facebook page on January 21, 2022. Miss Hydes advanced to Round 2 of the Head-to-Head Challenge, but unfortunately did not advance to the semi-finals of that challenge. The head-to-head challenge is a pre-competition that showcases the contestants’ ability to answer questions regarding their personal lives, and their country. The contestants are put into random groups to compete against each other. 16 winners were chosen to advance to the semi-finals. The final eight winners advanced to the top 40.
“I am very excited to finally be able to showcase the 70th edition of the Miss World pageant to our Cayman community as the show has not been aired on local television for many years,” Director of Miss World Cayman and Founder of Girl Power Cayman, Pamela Ebanks-Small commented. “Special thanks to Logic for purchasing the show and offering it free of charge to Logic customers. It will be very exciting to watch what our Queen, Rashana has experienced during her time in Puerto Rico. We are all very proud of her accomplishments.” Ms. Ebanks-Small said.
The viewing party event will also be an opportunity for pageant hopefuls to meet our past Miss World delegates, and learn more about the Miss World Cayman Islands Pageant and Girl Power Cayman organization. Pageant hopefuls will have the chance to sign up for this year’s pageant as recruitment continues through April 15th, 2022. The new pageant date is slated for August 27, 2022.
In recognition of 70 years of the Miss World pageant, the Miss World Cayman Islands Committee has been reflecting on past Queens who have represented the country on the world stage by way of throwback posts across the MWCI social media platforms. In addition, 19 out of some 36 past Queens who competed on the world stage during their reign, were brought together for an iconic photo shoot at the University College of the Cayman Islands auditorium on Saturday, October 9th to celebrate, memorialize and reflect on the Miss World journey over 70 years. The photo shoot was inspired by MWCI Director Pamela Ebanks-Small who noted the concept came from Vanity Fair. The photo shoot, directed by local Photographer Wil Bignal, took about two days to set up. A framed copy of the group photo was presented to Julia Morley, Chairman and CEO of the Miss World Organization by the MWCI Director, Pamela Ebanks-Small. The 70th anniversary photo will be displayed at the upcoming viewing party event.
