Dart and students of Cayman International School have joined forces in art again, bringing life to one of the entrance walls at the Arts & Recreation Centre (ARC) with a stunning Cayman-inspired mural.

The mural project kicked off in April this year, following the success of the mural painted in the pedestrian underpass that connects the east and west sides of Cayman Parkway on Esterley Tibbetts Highway. Officially revealed to the public this month, the mural brightens the ARC, a facility used frequently for community, sporting and school events.

The mural concept, themed “Abstract Cayman,” was introduced to the students when Dart’s Visual Designer Keri Lawrence and Junior Visual Designer Gabrielle Scott met with CIS Art Club students and teachers for an interactive and inspirational lesson on abstract art. Following this educational session, the students worked on designs depicting elements reflecting Cayman’s nature both on land and under the sea, in abstract form.

“The process was exciting from beginning to end, seeing the students learn and explore the abstract art form and hand in their pieces to us. We really wanted to make sure that all their work was included and represented,” said Lawrence.

Using an iPad, both Lawrence and Scott intricately redrew and combined all elements from the students’ work to tell the story the students had envisioned. The final concept included mangroves, turtles, coral and chicken as well as the Cayman Islands Coat of Arms, a sailboat, iguanas and the islands’ blue seas.

Once the final design was established, Lawrence and Scott used a projector to display the design on the wall and sketched it out before completing it by getting the students’ assistance in painting the wall. While it took several shifts over a few weeks, the collaboration was eventually complete and was unveiled in front of a group of Cayman International School students, teachers, family members, the media and Dart representatives in an event on 7 December.

Scott, the newest member to join Dart’s creative team, said: “It was here (at Dart) where I discovered what it meant to be a visual designer. I could use the digital art skills I learned in university and the fine art skills I learned in high school.”

The students were able to make their final mark on the mural by signing a portion of it along with Lawrence and Scott.

The mural can be seen right at the entrance to the ARC facing Camana Bay. All are encouraged to share their photos of the newest art to hit Camana Bay on social media using the hashtag #CBArt and tagging @camana_bay on Instagram and @Camana Bay on Facebook.
