Working to mitigate the threats posed by COVID-19, the Utility Regulation and Competition Office (OfReg) has engaged telecommunications service providers to ensure that all mobile and landline calls made to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) hotline at 949-6555 are free of charge.
The collaboration between OfReg, Digicel, Logic and Flow will enable citizens to access up-do-date information on the virus and assistance. There are plans underway to make this a permanent benefit after the pandemic passes.
Providing free access to hotline services is part of OfReg’s “Keep Cayman Connected” campaign that is uniting OfReg ICT and telecommunications service providers in an effort to ensure that consumers remain connected to vital resources during these unprecedented times.
“Since Hazard Management’s activation of the NEOC on 3 March, OfReg has collaborated with the service providers to swiftly identify and address concerns,” said Alee Fa’amoe, OfReg’s Executive Director of Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
These actions to keep ‘Cayman Connected’ are a testament to OfReg’s role in not only enforcing regulations, but also working to make improvements based on the premise that quality, high-speed connectivity is not a luxury, but a basic need. OfReg’s actions geared towards educating residents about telecommunications and connectivity are led by its mascot, Professor Fibre that can be followed on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook at @CaymanConnected and using #CaymanConnected.
