The Official Opposition members wish to express their concern with the Governor’s statement issued on August 5^th, 2020, which outlines his reasons and justifications for exercising his powers under Section 81 of the Constitution to pass into law a “version of the current (Domestic Partnership) Bill” pursuant to a directive from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Following the Governor’s statement, the members of the Official Opposition have had several meetings to discuss the matter. The Hon. Leader of the Opposition has now written to the Governor requesting copies of the correspondence between his office and the FCO that has resulted in his decision to take the above course of action.

We feel that for such a divisive, contentious and emotive issue it would be in the interest of good governance to have full and transparent disclosure so that the Caymanian people can have no doubts regarding the position of the U.K. Government. The Hon. Leader of the Opposition has therefore asked that the Governor make this public.

We are now awaiting the Governor’s response to this request and will issue a further statement once that has been received.
