Shortly before 12:20AM on Monday, 3 January, officers responded to a report of a serious assault which took place in the parking lot of The Strand complex on West Bay Road. It was reported that two men had been in a vehicle at the location when they were approached by two other men who made homophobic remarks towards them. The men who made the remarks subsequently assaulted the first two men, kicking and punching them repeatedly.
Both men received what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries, with one of the men having a broken nose. Emergency services attended the location and the men were transported to hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and subsequently released.
“Although the investigation is still in the early stages, initial reports suggest that the men were assaulted due to their sexual orientation,” said Detective Chief Inspector Richard Barrow, who is overseeing the investigation. “This type of violence is inexcusable and has no place in our community. We are working with urgency to locate the perpetrators and bring them to justice, and we appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.”
Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to contact George Town CID at 949-4222.
