Just after 4:15PM, 24 August, a member of the public attended the West Bay Police Station seeking assistance with her teenage son who had been displaying violent and aggressive behaviour and making threats to cause harm and damage property by setting her car on fire.

They attempted to negotiate with the teen to calm him down, however, the teen became aggressive and verbally abusive towards the officers, making threats against them.

During the exchange, the teen walked away from the officers and went into his mother’s vehicle where he retrieved a machete, which he then began using to threaten and attack the officers. Another civilian, who was also present at the West Bay Police Station at the time, was ushered inside for their safety as officers called for assistance. At the same time the brother of the teen arrived at the WBPS and disarmed the teen without injury.

The officers then informed the family that the teen, who suffers from a mental disability, was being arrested for several offenses that he had committed during his time at the WBPS, at which time the brother also became aggressive towards the police. They both aggressively approached one of the police officers assisting with the incident and the officer deployed his pepper spray in response. The mother, who was the initial complainant in the matter then also intervened and was caught by the pepper spray that was being deployed.

All three parties were arrested on suspicion of several public order offenses including causing fear or provocation of violence, threats to kill, possession of an offensive weapon and disorderly conduct at a police station. On arrival at the Cayman Islands Detention Centre, all three were immediately decontaminated and booked into custody. All three were granted bail pending further investigations.
