Just before 8:15PM on Sunday 24 January, officers were carrying out patrols in the area of Yacht Drive roundabout when they observed a white Chevy Equinox travelling south in the north bound lane at a high speed towards oncoming traffic. After observing this, officers made attempts to stop the vehicle using police lights and sirens and following the vehicle at a safe distance and speed. In the interest of public’s safety the officers discontinued their efforts to stop the vehicle as they approached the area of Safe Haven, at which time the vehicle they lost sight of the vehicle and made their return the West Bay district.
Shortly thereafter, police and other emergency services were dispatched by the 9-1-1 Communication Centre to a two vehicle collision on West Bay Road in the vicinity of Kintyre Drive, where it was reported that a white Chevy Equinox was involved in a head on collision with a white Chevy Silverado truck, causing front end damage to both vehicles involved.
On arrival, officers observed that the white Chevy Equinox was the same vehicle that had been driving in a dangerous manner on the Esterly Tibbetts Highway and had failed to stop when signalled to do so by the police. The driver of the white Chevy Equinox, who appeared to have been injured, was immediately transported by ambulance to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment. The Chevy Equinox was recovered as evidence by the officers in attendance.
The driver of the Chevy Silverado did not report any injuries; however, a roadside breath test was administered, which showed him over the legal limit. The 47-year-old-man of George Town was arrested on suspicion of DUI and later bailed.
When officers arrived at the hospital to make checks on the driver of the Chevy Equinox, they were informed that he had refused treatment and self-discharged. Officers are continuously making efforts to locate the man in relation to several driving offenses.
