Premier, and Minister for Sustainability and Climate Resiliency, Hon. Wayne Panton, accompanied by Chief Officer Jennifer Ahearn, made his first official visit to the three government departments under his ministry last week (Thursday, 29 April 2021).
The Premier and Chief Officer toured the CI National Weather Service on Owen Roberts Drive, the Department of Environment (DoE) at Cayman Environmental Centre on North Sound Way and Hazard Management Cayman Islands at the Government Administration Building.
Guided by the respective heads of department Mr Panton and Ms Ahearn received a high-level situation report from each agency that covered key services and major projects, current and future resourcing needs, issues faced by the agency and recommended solutions.
Speaking at the end of the final visit, Premier Panton said: “I think it really demonstrates the level of sophistication that we’ve achieved as a country, the level of preparedness in emergency situations.
I’m really impressed with the level of preparedness and level of detail with which the whole HMCI operation has been set up. Obviously I’m very proud of our Department of Environment and the great work that they do. They must continue doing that. The National Weather Service is integral to all emergency services and all that we do here.
That’s why I’ve created this Ministry that builds in sustainability and ensures that we have climate resilience built in as well. I’ve really enjoyed meeting everyone. It has been a wonderful day.”
