The international ’virtual’ observer mission from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association British Islands and Mediterranean region released its final report on Friday 25, June. I am grateful to the CPA for agreeing to observe virtually, the third time they have observed Cayman’s elections.
I hosted dinner at Government House to thank the Domestic Observer team for their work in monitoring our recent General Election. The team, ably led by Hadleigh Roberts, performed a valuable role for our community at a time when international observers could not visit. They published their report on 31 May.
The recommendations in both reports are comprehensive and well evidenced.
The Supervisor of Elections Wesley Howell has noted that the Elections Office will now carefully review these recommendations and produce formal proposals for Cabinet and Parliament to consider. These proposals will be presented to Cabinet by the Deputy Governor in the next few months. There are a number of issues that require action, including on elections finance, to ensure Cayman continues to build on its strong reputation for holding free and fair elections.
I would once more like to congratulate the Elections Supervisor and his excellent team on efficiently organising the elections to the high standard we have come to expect.
