Fellow Caymanians and Residents,
This afternoon I want to provide an update on an important issue of national concern - which is the recent upsurge in crime in Grand Cayman.
I want to reassure everyone that the safety and security of the people of the Cayman Islands remains the main priority of this Government.
Like many of you, I was alarmed at the recent incidents of armed robberies in Grand Cayman, including those occurring last night. The Government is resolute in restoring tranquility for everyone including individuals, businesses and the community.
In light of this situation, I along with Her Excellency The Governor convened a meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Derek Bryne today (Friday, July 7) and invited him to brief members of Cabinet and the Elected Government on RCIPS plans to respond to the increased criminal activities.
The Commissioner has reassured the Government that the RCIPS has already activated plans to tackle the spate of robberies which resulted in four arrests this week as well as a second man being charged for involvement in the recent bank armed-robbery.
Some of the steps that have already begun include:
• Deployment of a task force dedicated to investigating leads and leveraging intelligence to apprehend suspects;
• Targeted patrolling of high risk areas;
• Maintaining of police presence on our roads; and
• Active community patrols.
The RCIPS is following leads in the recent incidents and it is our hope that the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice.
The Government reaffirmed its full support for both the RCIPS and Commissioner Byrne, who indicated they have the necessary resources at this time. However, the police cannot do this alone. The greatest tool the police have in solving crime is the cooperation from the community it serves.
It is incumbent on every resident to play their part as our police work to apprehend those responsible. Regrettably, we know it’s the actions of a few that have negatively impact the wellbeing of our community. Please rest assured that the Government and your police service are resolute in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Before I close, I assure residents crime will not be tolerated nor will it become a norm. The police and the Government are taking a zero-tolerance approach. Need is never a justification to commit a crime but where there is a need, I am proud to lead a caring Government that is heavily investing in social programmes to support our people.
Our Islands are known for its peaceful and crime free environment; we cannot allow a handful of criminals to change our way of life and global reputation. Share what you know and help address this issue quickly.
May God bless you, and may God continue to bless these Cayman Islands.
