The cruise berthing referendum has created a significant divide within our community. Recent discussions have surfaced concerns regarding the transparency and completeness of information available about the cruise berthing plans. Sustainable Cayman advocates for civil community dialogue and informed decision-making underpinned by comprehensive environmental impact assessments and reliable data. Our role is to support these processes by providing resources and information. Due to our grant funding agreements, we do not participate directly in debates or discussions that could be interpreted as controversial. However, we are committed to facilitating access to accurate and relevant information to empower community discussions.
Regarding the cruise berthing debate, as an organisation, in line with our mission, we advocate for a sustainable boutique cruise tourism model. This approach prioritizes quality over quantity, ensuring that tourism development sustains our marine ecosystems, benefits local businesses, and enriches the visitor experience while respecting the carrying capacity of our islands.
We urge all parties to maintain respectful dialogue as we approach the April 30, 2025 referendum and encourage the public to take the time to become well informed about the issue with available resources, reports and studies.
