UWC Cayman Islands, the local national committee of the global educational movement, is seeking applicants for its 2021 selection process, which begins with a written application due Monday, 15 February. UWC’s mission is to bring young people together from diverse backgrounds and use education as a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Over 155 national committees and selection contacts operate around the world, selecting hundreds of young people each year to attend one of 18 prestigious colleges across five continents.

The selection process includes a written application, academic transcripts, an individual interview and a half day of individual and group activities and assessments with other finalists.

UWC Cayman Islands Vice-Chairperson Martina Jackson said: “Each year, we are impressed by the outstanding calibre and passion of the applicants and look forward to our 2021 application process. Our Caymanian students not only gain from UWC but they also have the opportunity to represent Cayman, give back to their colleges, host communities and the wider world. A UWC education goes beyond the two-years, as alumni remain committed to the UWC mission and values and become life-long change agents.”

Ms Jackson also said that: “Aside from the challenges of studying an intensive curriculum overseas, we recognise that scholars now have the added pressure of studying during the global pandemic. We are asking more from them than from other Caymanian students at any other time in our movement’s history and our current students have already shown particular ambition and resilience. We, in turn, offer them our utmost support.”

In 2020, two Caymanian students, Melissa Bachet and Zolla Jones were selected and have begun their UWC education despite the challenges of COVID-19. Ms Bachet, formerly of John Gray High School, was selected for UWC-USA in New Mexico and Ms Jones, of Cayman Prep and High School, for UWC East Africa in Tanzania.

Both students were high achievers - each earning 11 high level exam passes at CXC/GCSE level including several As and A*s. Ms Bachet was involved in robotics and mentoring and has an avid interest in art and Ms Jones’ activities included Key Club, Youth Flex, hiking, diving and gaming. 

Ms Jones shared, “I am honoured to have been selected to be the first Caymanian scholar to attend UWC East Africa. This is an amazing opportunity and so different from anything I have ever experienced,” having travelled to Tanzania in August. She returned home for the holidays and plans to temporarily commence online learning until she is able to get connecting flights through the UK back to Tanzania.

Ms. Bachet stated “I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to be a part of the UWC movement. I look forward to all the incredible memories I will make during these two years and beyond. I hope to represent my country well and encourage other young Caymanians to be a part of this once in a lifetime experience”. She has completed her first term via online learning, due to delays obtaining her student visa in Jamaica, however, is pleased with the college’s management of the online learning.

Ms Jackson, who will chair the 2021 Selections Committee, stated, “UWC is truly a force like no other and the world needs UWC now more than ever. The movement has really come together in the past year and we are grateful to be able to continue introducing Caymanian students to this mission.”
