The University College of the Cayman Islands is going back on the air.

Assistant professor Ivan Eubanks is reintroducing video production classes to the UCCI curriculum in Spring 2022, part of which will involve regular online newscasts on UCCI-TV.

The courses are just part of a wide array of offerings students can choose from at the university during registration for spring semester, now underway. Classes begin January 10 and students are encouraged to register early, before classes fill, for the best chance of getting the schedules they want.

Those schedules can now include delving into the school’s television studio.

“We’re bringing back Video Production and Video Editing,” said Eubanks, “We’re planning to get UCCI-TV going again.”

The refreshed courses come as Eubanks returns to the classroom after a year serving as interim dean of business and finance. He said he’s looking forward to getting back to the studio and working with students, “which is something I really enjoy.”

Equipped with a green screen, two editing suites and two top-of-the-line video cameras, the studio was first opened when Eubanks joined the faculty at UCCI in 2017. Since then, a number of students have gone on to work in the local industry, either in news agencies, commercial production or government.

“We’ve had a strong track record of students getting outside employment in the industry,” Eubanks said. “UCCI-TV is really a unique offering for Grand Cayman.”

Students in the courses have produced video of and for campus events, promotional pieces, documentaries and even an earthquake preparedness video for Hazard Management Cayman Islands.

“It’s a great way for students who are interested in this avenue of industry to get their feet wet and kind of learn what it’s all about,” Eubanks said.

Registration for these courses, along with the entire slate of programmes offered at UCCI – from technical and vocational courses to graduate degrees – is now open.
