A cold front that was followed by high barometric pressure has begun to move away from the Cayman Islands. High pressure continues to cause strong to gale force winds and the public is strongly urged to stay away from coastlines and avoid venturing out to sea as a marine warning remains in effect for the Cayman Islands. Weather conditions are expected to continue to improve overnight.
Grand Cayman
The following roads remain closed to ensure public safety: Northwest Point Road (vicinity of Cracked Conch), junction of Northwest Point and Town Hall Roads, North Church Street (beginning at Eastern Avenue), Bodden Road, Mary Street and Boiler Road. Emergency responders are assessing critical infrastructure and clearing debris from roads in areas, that have been deemed safe, to allow for business continuity tomorrow, Wednesday 7th February.
As weather is predicted to continue to improve overnight, schools are expected to re-open. Damage assessments are currently underway by Public Works Department, Department of Planning, Hazard Management Cayman Islands and the National Roads Authority. The Ministry of Education is finalising its logistical plan for re-opening of schools, and asks that parents and students visit their channels for details through the evening.
The public is asked to plan ahead in their travels tomorrow, as a number of coastal roads will be closed. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) will be on hand to guide motorists and assist with traffic control. Special caution should be taken while driving to avoid obstructions such as fallen tree limbs and power lines.
Persons should continue to stay away from coastlines until otherwise directed, as strong wave activity is expected to continue through Thursday.
Cayman Brac
Road clearing is underway in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, and roads are expected to reopen this evening. Damage assessment has also begun in the Sister Islands. In-depth damage assessments have commenced at the Cayman Brac Port, as the Port Authority building has been notably impacted.
Schools will reopen on Cayman Brac tomorrow, Wednesday 7 February.
Members of the public are encouraged to stay tuned to official Government channels, www.caymanprepared.ky and www.weather.gov.ky for updates.
